Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in mid-18th century France, Louis XVI style seating is characterised by neoclassical symmetry, straight lines, and architectural influence. Chairs commonly display oval or rectangular backs, geometric frame mouldings, and straight, fluted, tapered legs inspired by Greco-Roman antiquity.

The underlying frames are typically carved from hardwoods such as beech or walnut before being prepared with gesso and water-gilded with genuine gold leaf. Traditional upholstery construction incorporates coil springs, horsehair filling, webbed bases, and fabrics like silk damask or velvet.

Authentic 18th-century pieces feature hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery held with wooden pegs, asymmetrical wear on gilded surfaces, and evidence of hand-carved tool marks on unseen frame sections. Later 19th-century reproductions often exhibit machine-cut components, modern screws, and oil gilding over uniform factory prep layers.

Pair rich giltwood armchairs with minimalist contemporary sofas, polished concrete, or neutral walls to create intentional visual contrast. Position a pair framing a fireplace or set within a bay window to establish structured formal seating while allowing the classic geometry to stand out.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry squirrel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical sprays which dissolve gesso layers. Vacuum velvet upholstery using a low-suction soft brush attachment following the direction of the pile, and keep the set away from direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading.
