French Patinated Bronze Figure of Demeter (Ceres),19th Century, with Sickle. A Seated Classical Goddess.

19th century
Description

A finely cast late 19th century French patinated bronze figure depicting Demeter (Ceres), the classical goddess of agriculture and the harvest.

The goddess is shown seated in relaxed pose beside a fluted column, holding a sickle — a clear symbol of fertility and the reaping of grain. She is richly draped in flowing classical robes, with well-defined folds and a naturalistic treatment of form. At her feet are further agricultural motifs, reinforcing the identification with Demeter.

The casting is of good quality, with crisp detail to the drapery and a particularly well-modelled face. The surface retains its original warm brown patina, attractively worn on the high points, revealing the underlying bronze.

The figure is mounted on its original stepped base, with traditional internal fixing and weighted construction typical of quality French bronzes of the period.

A decorative and evocative neoclassical subject, well suited to both traditional and period interiors.

Condition

In good overall condition consistent with age.

The bronze retains its original patinated surface, showing honest wear and rubbing to the high points, particularly to the arm and drapery, revealing the underlying metal and enhancing its character.

There are no visible cracks or structural damage. Minor surface marks and light scuffs are present, as expected with a piece of this age.

The base is solid and stable, with typical internal construction and later felt pads to the underside. Some age related wear to the black slate.

Ready to display.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, French sculptors drew heavy inspiration from Greco-Roman classical mythology, depicting gods, goddesses, and allegorical figures with precise anatomical drapery and balanced compositions. These works were cast in fine patinated bronze for Grand Tour collectors and cultured domestic interiors.

These figures were typically cast using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting methods, followed by hand chasing to refine details in the metalwork. A chemical patina, ranging from deep brown to dark green, was applied using heat and acids, after which the piece was mounted onto a carved marble or ebonised timber plinth.

Authentic pieces generally display crisp hand-chased surface details, age-appropriate wear to the patina along raised edges, and evidence of historical casting processes such as threaded assembly rod construction underneath. They may also display foundry marks, artist signatures, or cold-stamped serial numbers on the metal base.

A classical bronze figure serves as a grounding focal point when positioned on a mantelpiece, a dark wood sideboard, or within a minimalist bookcase. Combining the dark metal sculpture with modern art or clean-lined contemporary furniture creates a sophisticated aesthetic contrast.

Dust the figure regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a clean camel-hair brush to prevent grime build-up in detailed areas. Apply a thin layer of clear, neutral microcrystalline wax annually to protect the patinated surface from atmospheric moisture and fingerprints.
