Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Gainsborough armchair, also known as a broad glass chair, is a type of wide, deep-seated English upholstered armchair that emerged in the 18th century. It features an upholstered back and seat, exposed carved wooden arm supports, and cabriole or square legs, named after the artist Thomas Gainsborough who frequently depicted them in portraits.

George II style Gainsborough chairs are typically constructed from solid mahogany due to its strength and suitability for intricate hand carving. Upholstery traditionally consisted of silk damask, wool tapestry, or leather, secured over horsehair padding with brass stud trim.

Key characteristics of George II style chairs include cabriole legs ending in pad or claw and ball feet, carved acanthus leaf detailing on the knees, and sweeping, down-curved arm supports with scrolled handrests.

Gainsborough armchairs work well as statement accent pieces in a formal sitting room, flanking a fireplace, or placed within a home library. Their substantial proportions and carved woodwork contrast effectively against minimalist contemporary sofas or neutral backdrops.

Maintain the mahogany woodwork by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a neutral beeswax polish annually along the wood grain. Protect damask upholstery from direct sunlight to prevent fading, and use a specialized fabric cleaner or professional service for stain removal.
