Stunning Art Nouveau Pierced Silver Dressing Table Mirror Animals & Birds 1887

19th century
For Sale by The Fancy Fox
Description

An absolutely delightful small silver trefoil shaped easel-backed dressing table mirror. The frame is cast and pierced with all manner of whimsical and magical creatures hidden amongst the scrolling, flowering vines. Green man masks sit in the centre of each lobe. There are squirrels and curlews, the heads of other birds at the ends of some of the vines, and lion heads, out of the mouths of which pour forth other vines. It really is a treat to look at. The glass is bevelled and certainly appears to be original and the easel back is covered in a dark blue leather or leatherette (this is not original but has clearly been done exceptionally well and displays beautifully). Hallmarked to the front for London 1887, makers Rosenthal, Jacob & Co (Julius (Judah) Rosenthal & Samuel Jacob), and partial marks to the side.

The front measures 15.9cm (6 1/4") high and 15.5cm (6 1/8") wide, and it stands 14.3cm (5 5/8") tall and 12.7cm (5") front to back.

In excellent condition with no damage, losses or repairs to the silver and minimal handling wear. The glass is very good overall, there is very slight de-silvering / foxing at the very edge of the top lobe which can be seen, but not elsewhere. There are a couple of very tiny nicks and very fine light scratching, perfectly appropriate for its age. The strut is secure and the backing is in excellent condition.

Declaration

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late 19th-century silver vanity mirrors often combine Victorian naturalism with emerging Art Nouveau fluid forms. They frequently display intricate pierced metalwork, scrollwork, floral motifs, birds, and mythological mascarons surrounding shaped or bevelled glass plates.

These pieces typically consist of a cast or stamped sterling silver front frame mounted over a velvet, leather, or wooden easel back support. The mirror plate itself is usually glass, often featuring a hand-bevelled edge.

Authenticity is verified by checking for British hallmarks stamped into the silver frame, which indicate the purity grade, assay office, date letter, and makers mark. Additionally, period pieces exhibit hand-finished pierced detailing and signs of historic age on the backing materials.

An antique silver mirror functions well on a dressing table, bedroom chest, or hallway console table. The reflective silver finish complements both contemporary minimalistic backdrops and eclectic decorative schemes.

Dust the detailed pierced openwork regularly using a soft brush. When necessary, clean the silver surfaces carefully with a gentle silver polishing cloth, taking care not to let polish accumulate in deep crevices or contact the mirror backing material.
