Faux Bamboo Bed C.1890

19th century
Description

Late 19th.c. French faux bamboo bed c.1890. In pine with applied beechwood decoration turned to imitate bamboo, reflecting the fashion for Japanese art and design. A large single bed to take a 51½" (130cm) x 75½" (192cm) mattress. Crossed pediment to the headboard, turned finials to both the head and foot, extensive bamboo style mouldings also continued on the side rails. Raised on the original castors. A few chips from the edges of the finials, otherwise excellent condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops. Dismantles for delivery.

Faux bamboo furniture became prominent during the late nineteenth century, particularly within the Aesthetic Movement and French provincial design. Inspired by East Asian imports, European cabinetmakers carved timber to imitate the nodes and natural form of bamboo.

These beds were typically constructed using fine-grained hardwoods such as beech, maple, or pine. The wood was hand-turned and carved to create bamboo-like segmentations before being finished with clear varnishes or warm honey-toned stains.
