Georgian Blue & White Footed Bowl Ridgway C1820

Description

This beautifully designed ENGLISH BLUE AND WHITE POTTERY BOWL dates from circa 1820.

It bears a blue printed mark ‘DRESDEN OPAQUE CHINA’ to the base and is attributed to the RIDGWAY FACTORY.

The handles are a delight, incorporating both Anthemion and Acanthus Leaf designs.

To give some idea of scale The last photograph shows a large Pink Lady Apple.

The condition is good with no restoration.

Developed in Britain during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, transferware features copperplate-engraved designs printed onto tissue paper and transferred to earthenware before glazing.

These pieces were typically crafted from lead-glazed earthenware or pearlware, decorated with cobalt oxide blue underglaze printing prior to firing.

Look for characteristic cobalt colouration, fine crazing within the glaze, visible transfer seam lines, and makers marks or pattern numbers impressed or printed on the underside.

Position the vessel as a dining table centrepiece, display it on a sideboard filled with botanical elements, or place it empty on a mantelpiece to highlight the interior pattern.
