Antique Metalware 18thc Spiral Candlestick on Patinated Fruitwood Base. French C1770-90

18th century
Description

I love this form of early candlestick , it is in good working order and is known as a spiral or coil candlestick.....it still retains the oiginal "traveller" to raise the candle as it burns down....the base is turned from fruitwood and the whole candlestick is in very good condition with an excellent natural colour....these would have been typically used in barns, stables and cellars....the spiral coil can stop the candle setting fire to straw or hay if it is knocked over.

French C1770-90.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A spiral candlestick is an 18th-century lighting device crafted with a coiled iron body that allows an internal slider or hook to adjust the candle height as the wax burns down.

These candlesticks were typically made from hand-forged wrought iron coiled into a cylinder, which was then secured into a turned timber base made of hardwood such as oak, beech, or fruitwood.

Authentic period pieces exhibit subtle hammer marks from hand-forging, slight irregularities in the coil spacing, historical surface oxidisation, and natural shrinkage wear around the timber base.

Position the candlestick on a mantelpiece, console table, or dining table alongside contemporary ceramics and natural wood to introduce tactile historical texture into modern rooms.

Keep the candlestick in a dry environment to prevent corrosion, clean gently with a soft dry brush, and apply a light coat of clear microcrystalline wax to protect both the iron patina and timber.
