Description

A finely modelled Samson of Paris porcelain figure of a bacchante, executed in the Derby style and dating to the mid-19th century. The figure belongs to a recognised Samson series known as the “Four Muses”, with closely related examples sharing the same pose and attributes. She is shown holding grapes, with a tambourine at her feet, reflecting Bacchic symbolism.

The decoration is characterised by a vivid cobalt-blue drapery enriched with gilt ornament, set against finely painted flesh tones and detailed facial features. The modelling is fluid and well balanced, typical of high-quality Samson production.

The underside bears a puce mark of a crown above a letter “D”, used by Samson in imitation of Derby factory marks. Samson became known for refined interpretations of European porcelain, often closely echoing original factory works.

A desirable cabinet figure from a recognised Samson series, combining classical subject matter with strong decorative appeal.
