MEZZOTINT PORTRAIT OF CATHERINE BUNBURY (NEE HORNECK) BY JAMES WATSON AFTER SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS.
Catherine Bunbury (née Horneck) by James Watson, after Sir Joshua Reynolds.
The sitter is depicted three-quarter length, leaning her head thoughtfully against her right hand with her elbow resting on a stone ledge or table. Her expression is serene and reflective. She wears a voluminous, high-waisted gown with layered sleeves, characteristic of late 18th-century fashion. Her hair is styled in a tall, elaborate ''pompadour'' arrangement adorned with a veil or ribbon.
The setting is a blend of interior and exterior. To the left, a draped curtain opens to reveal a classical landscape with trees and rolling hills under a cloudy sky.
