Early 19th Century Regency Circular Convex Giltwood Mirror with Eagle Surmount

19th century
Description

A fine early 19th century Regency period circular convex mirror, dating to circa 1820–1830.

The mirror is set within a giltwood frame with a moulded surround and ebonised slip, retaining its original convex plate which provides a wonderfully atmospheric reflection. The frame is surmounted by a well-carved and expressive spread-wing eagle perched upon a rocky outcrop, a classic motif of the Regency period symbolising strength and vigilance.

Regency convex mirrors became prominent in Britain during the early 19th century, featuring curved glass designed to reflect light and encompass entire rooms. They were frequently crowned with sculptural motifs such as eagles or foliage.

These mirrors typically feature carved timber or composition frames finished with gold leaf gilding, often containing an ebonised reeded inner slip to secure the convex glass.

Look for hand-carving details, natural craquelure and oxidisation in the gold leaf, original timber backing boards, and authentic silvered or mercury convex glass.

Position the mirror above a mantelpiece, console, or sideboard to serve as an architectural focal point while distributing natural light across contemporary space schemes.

Dust the gilded surfaces lightly using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaning agents that could dissolve the delicate gesso and gold leaf.
