Early 19th Century Mahogany Coopered Wine Cooler or Planter on Stand C.1820

19th century
Description

A good early 19th century mahogany coopered wine cooler or planter, dating to circa 1820, of traditional form and raised on an elegant original stand.

The body is constructed in the manner of a coopered bucket, formed from vertical mahogany staves and bound with brass bands, which have developed a rich, mellow patina over time. The sides are fitted with attractive cast lion’s head ring handles, adding both decorative appeal and practicality.

The stand is of fine quality, raised on four gently tapering legs terminating in original brass caps and castors, allowing for ease of movement. The proportions are particularly pleasing, giving the piece a light and refined appearance despite its robust construction.

Originally intended for cooling wine or champagne, this versatile piece also works beautifully today as a planter or decorative feature.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A coopered wine cooler is an early 19th-century vessel constructed using wooden staves bound with metal hoops, created to hold ice and keep wine bottles cool during formal dining.

Regency wine coolers were predominantly constructed from mahogany, reinforced with brass hoops, and fitted with cast brass lion-mask ring handles and brass castors.

Authentic pieces feature traditional coopered stave joinery, hand-fitted brass bands, original brass hardware with hand-finished details, and fitted timber stands designed specifically for the basin.

An antique wine cooler can function as a planter for indoor houseplants, serve as decorative storage in an entryway, or remain a functional bar accessory in a dining room.

Dust the mahogany surfaces regularly with a dry cloth, apply beeswax polish sparingly along the grain, and clean the brass bands gently using a soft microfibre cloth without harsh chemicals.
