Early 20th Century Studio Pottery Stick Stand with Hand Painted Decoration C.1920

1900 - 1920
Description

An attractive early 20th century studio pottery stick stand, dating to circa 1920, of square tapering form with a gently flared rim and shaped base.

The surface is decorated with stylised foliage and red flowering motifs, set against a softly speckled ground. The muted greens and warm red tones contrast beautifully with the natural pale green glaze, giving the piece a distinctive Arts & Crafts feel.

The glaze has pooled attractively in places, with subtle variations in tone and texture that highlight its handmade character. These organic qualities, along with minor irregularities, add to its charm and authenticity.

Both decorative and practical, this piece would work well in a hallway for walking sticks or umbrellas, or equally as a striking standalone decorative object.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Studio pottery stick stands emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries during the Arts and Crafts movement, shifting umbrella storage from industrial cast iron to artisan hand-crafted ceramics.

These items were predominantly constructed from kiln-fired earthenware or stoneware and finished with decorative glazes, hand-painted pigments, or slipware embellishments.

Authentic pieces from this period often display subtle irregularities from hand-moulding or throwing, studio potters impressed marks or monograms near the base, and characteristic lead or tin glazes.

Place the stand near an entryway or in a foyer to store walking canes and umbrellas, or use it empty as a architectural ceramic accent alongside neutral timber furniture.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth and clean surfaces using lukewarm water with a mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemicals or submersion that could compromise aged glaze crazing.
