Fine Edwardian Satinwood Dressing Table by Mappin & Webb with Fitted Vanity Box C.1910

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine and elegant Edwardian satinwood dressing table by Mappin & Webb of Oxford Street, London, dating to circa 1900–1910. Of exceptional quality, the upper section is formed as a fully fitted vanity box, veneered in beautifully figured satinwood with striking, lively grain throughout.

The hinged top opens to reveal a superbly appointed interior, complete with original mirror, cut glass bottles and jars, and a comprehensive suite of manicure and grooming implements, many with bone mounts. The interior is thoughtfully arranged with fitted compartments, retaining its original lining and demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship associated with this renowned maker. Additional pull-out trays and side compartments enhance both practicality and charm.

The base stands on elegant tapering legs united by shaped stretchers, giving the piece a refined and balanced silhouette typical of the Edwardian revival of earlier neoclassical styles.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian dressing tables produced between 1901 and 1910 are characterized by light timbers such as satinwood, graceful classical proportions, slender tapered legs, and refined inlay or veneer work.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilized golden satinwood, mahogany, and rosewood, often accented with boxwood stringing, ebony crossbanding, hand-cut dovetail joints, and solid brass hardware.

Authentic pieces feature distinctive figure patterns in the veneer, hand-planed interior drawer linings, original brass locks or maker stamps, and signs of natural age along joints and untrimmed surfaces.

Place the piece in a dressing room, bedroom alcove, or hallway to serve as a compact focal accent, pairing its warm timber tones with neutral walls and subtle metallic accents.

Maintain satinwood surfaces by dusting with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and periodically applying a high-grade beeswax paste, while keeping the item away from direct sunlight and radiators.
