Fascinating vases crafted in the manner of archaistic examples

Quality bronze presents deep chestnut hues with a cool, tactile finish

Inspired by ancient Chinese ritual bronzes from the Shang and Zhou dynasties

The term Hu referring to a traditional baluster-form wine vessel used in ceremonial contexts

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Hu shape originates from archaic Chinese ritual bronze vessels, traditionally used for holding wine or food during ceremonies. Over subsequent centuries, including the Qing dynasty and Victorian era interest in Chinoiserie, craftsmen reproduced these traditional silhouettes with intricate cast patterns.

These vessels are typically cast from copper alloys using lost-wax or sand-casting methods. After casting, metalworkers hand-tool the relief details and apply chemical patination treatments to produce dark brown or bronzed surface finishes.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-chased relief details, natural wear to elevated surface areas, and genuine patination in carved recesses. The weight of heavy cast metal, coupled with traditional construction seams or hollow casting marks, helps distinguish age.

A bronze Hu vase serves as a focal accent when styled on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or within a library display case. Its dark metallic finish and sculpted texture complement both classic period rooms and modern minimalist spaces.

Maintain patinated bronze by dusting regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth. Avoid applying water, liquid polishes, or harsh chemical detergents, as these can strip original patination and cause unwanted oxidisation.
