Description

This is a beautiful pair of oil on board paintings by Pieter Cornelis Dommersen. (Dutch, 1833-1918), signed and dated 1904 and 1910.

 The paintings are titled

"Fishermen and their families taking dinner on the beach"

and

"Mending the nets"

And they both feature sailboats against a beautiful seascape background.

 

Pieter Cornelis Dommersen came from a famous family of Dutch artists who moved to England in the 1860’s and changed the family name from Dommershuizen. He was the son of Peter Cornelis Dommersen and travelled around Europe and England, painting marine and town scenes. His works are still very popular and many have been reproduced in print, his originals, not surprisingly, are very much sought after.

 

Several examples of his work have sold at top auction houses, see Christies, Sotheby’s and Bonhams

Pieter Coenelis Dommerson

was born 6 December 1833 in the city of Utrecht, Netherlands as Pieter Cornelis Dommershuisen, illegitimate son of Cornelia Dommershuisen. Pre 1700 the family came from Dahlheim, near Koblenz, in Germany, so their family name was originally 'Dommershausen'. He was the elder brother of the painter Cornelis Christiaan Dommersen. Pieter Cornelis moved from the Netherlands to England in around 1855. He married Trinity Church, Marylebone, Middlesex on 29 January 1859 Anna Petronella Synja (Sijnja), born Amsterdam c. 1838, da. of Dr. (Medicine) Louis Synja and N.N. They had at least two sons and one daughter. His son William Raymond Dommersen (Dommerson) (1859-1927) also became a fine art artist in England, all three Dommersens painting the same genre of paintings.
