Description

Antique Mantel Clock with Alarm – Early 20th Century

An attractive early 20th-century mantel clock featuring Roman numerals and a two day movement with an alarm bell.

This mantel clock is probably German and is likely to have been made by Junghans, a well-known manufacturer.

The white dial displays Roman numerals with mainspring and alarm winding holes to the front.

The brass pendulum and key are original and the clock stands on an ebonised plinth and feet.

The case has been re-veneered in birds eye maple at some stage in the past.

The movement has been checked and the clock is in good working order, with the alarm mechanism functioning as intended. It keeps good time and requires winding once a day.

Overall in lovely condition, this classic clock would sit well on a mantelpiece, bedside table or desk.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mantel clocks are compact spring-driven timepieces designed to sit on a fireplace mantel, shelf, or sideboard. Early twentieth-century models often incorporated mechanical alarm functions alongside standard timekeeping, housed within decorative timber architectural cases.

These timepieces typically feature cases crafted from hardwoods or figured veneers, such as birdseye maple or mahogany, often accented with ebonised detailing. The internal movements consist of brass plates and steel gears, while dials feature enamel or painted brass with glass aperture covers.

Authentic examples display key indicator features such as hand-cut or early machine-cut brass movement plates, enamel dials with painted Roman numerals, pendulum regulation marks such as R and A, and natural age-related patina on metal and timber components.

Position the clock centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or bookshelf to serve as an anchor point. Pair the warm timber tones with structured ceramic vases, framed architectural prints, or brass decorative objects to create a balanced display.

Keep the timber case away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting or cracking. Dust the casing with a soft dry cloth and have the mechanical movement cleaned and lubricated by a professional horologist every three to five years.
