Antique Victorian Aesthetic Movement Mahogany Card Table C.1880

19th century
Description

A fine Aesthetic Movement Victorian fold-over card table, the exposed mahogany top with painted decoration set within an ebonised border, above a base formed of four turned and fluted columns set on a cross-form base centred by a turned finial, raised on shaped feet with brass castors. Ebonised and decorated throughout with crisp incised gilt detail, the top swivels and folds open to reveal a baize-lined playing surface with a red and gilt-tooled border.

A strong Aesthetic Movement piece from the latter part of the 19th century, it works beautifully as a side table in the closed position, while the fold-over top offers a practical full-sized surface for cards or entertaining when required.

Very good antique condition with some surface wear consistent with age. The top has been carefully cleaned back from a later painted finish and the original line decoration has been carefully repainted following the original design. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1880.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the late 19th century, Aesthetic Movement card tables feature Anglo-Japanese design influences, characteristically incorporating ebonised wood, slender turned supports, and incised geometric gilding.

These tables were typically crafted from dense hardwoods like mahogany or walnut, finished with a dark ebonised stain and decorated with incised gold leaf, marquetry, or brass fittings.

Authentic period pieces feature turned twin-pedestal columns, central stretchers with finials, original brass castors, and precise incised gilt detailing typical of the 1870s and 1880s.

Position the folded table against a wall as a console or hallway accent piece, pairing its dark profile with contemporary ceramics or simple metallic table lamps.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly to the timber, avoiding gilded or incised lines to prevent loss of detail.
