Description

A good original example of a Prussian steel Pickelhaube Helmet, dating from the First World War period, circa 1915–1918.

This example retains its correct brass spike, base, rear spine, and Prussian eagle plate with “FR” cypher and motto scroll, all consistent with known wartime production. The steel skull reflects the material substitutions adopted during the later war years, and is less commonly encountered & rarer than earlier leather examples.

The helmet retains its original form with visible service wear to the shell and fittings, alongside a worn but period leather liner. Overall, a scarce wartime variant of the classic Prussian pickelhaube, presenting well and consistent with late-war manufacture.

Condition Report:

• Steel shell showing age-related patina and light surface marking

• Brass fittings with honest wear and mellowed finish

• Liner present but worn and incomplete

• Chinstrap present (period type, originality not guaranteed)

Measurements:

• Height: approx. 34 cm (including spike)

• Width: approx. 18cm–(20cm overall)

• Depth: approx. 30 cm

Steel (ersatz) pickelhauben are less common than leather examples, particularly complete ones with fittings

FAQs

Designed in 1842 by King Frederick William IV of Prussia, the Pickelhaube was a spiked helmet worn by Prussian military personnel, police, and firefighters. It became an iconic symbol of the Prussian and Imperial German armed forces through the 19th century and into World War I.

Traditional pre-war Pickelhauben were made of pressed leather with brass or nickel fittings. Due to leather shortages during World War I, later variants from 1915 onwards were manufactured using pressed steel, sheet metal, or felt, paired with brass or iron insignia plates.

Authentic examples feature correct period construction, including original brass front plates (Wappen) secured by leather wedges or brass nuts, correct mounting spikes, and age-appropriate surface patina or light oxidisation on metal components.

A military helmet functions well as a focal display piece in traditional studies, private libraries, or modern minimalist interiors. Placing the object on a dedicated wooden display stand on a bookshelf, desk, or cabinet top allows its metallic textures to stand out.
