Ridgways Old Derby Porcelain Vases and Covers, C. 1891–1910

19th century
Description

A refined pair of English porcelain vases and covers by Ridgways, produced in the post-1891 period and decorated in the firm’s well-known “Old Derby” pattern. This design reflects a late Victorian interpretation of Japanese Imari decoration, combining strong colour with a disciplined layout.

The surface is richly decorated in cobalt blue, iron-red enamels and gilding on an ivory ground, with stylised floral motifs and angular reserves. The octagonal rims, domed covers and scroll handles create a balanced and elegant silhouette.

Ridgways developed “Old Derby” as a commercially successful revival pattern inspired by earlier Derby porcelain, and it remains one of the most sought-after designs produced by the factory.

A complete pair retaining both covers, a feature often lost and increasingly difficult to find.
