Description

An early Derby porcelain figure of a shepherdess with a lamb, dating to c.1756–1759. Produced during the Pale Family period, it reflects the earliest stage of Derby production, characterised by a light enamel palette and refined modelling.

The figure corresponds to model D17 in Peter Bradshaw’s classification of Derby figures, where it is recorded among the earliest pastoral subjects. It represents an early English interpretation of the Dresden shepherdess type, derived from the work of Johann Joachim Kändler.

Early versions are characterised by relatively simple dress, fresh enamel colours and softly modelled Rococo bases. The model was produced in several sizes and variations.

The underside is incised No. 60 and size mark 3, indicating one of four standard sizes. The type later evolved into the “Garland Shepherds” series.
