Japanese Satsuma Belt Buckle with Dragons, Meiji Period, C.1900

19th century
Description

A finely decorated Japanese Satsuma belt buckle from the Meiji period, composed of two circular panels painted with dragons above stylised waves on a crackled ivory ground. The decoration is enriched with enamel colours and extensive gilding.

The surface shows a combination of flat gilt outlining and raised gold dot decoration, creating a refined textured effect associated with late Meiji Satsuma work. The panels are mounted in metal fittings forming a functional buckle, intended for use with a belt.

Such pieces reflect the adaptation of Japanese decorative arts to Western fashion during the late 19th century, and were also produced for export markets where Satsuma ware was highly valued.

The buckle is presented in a fitted retailer’s case marked “Jones, 52 Beauchamp Place, London,” a Chelsea address associated with established jewellery retailers and the luxury trade.
