An Important Large 'Phoenix & Peony' Blue and White Brush Washer (Bi-xi)

19th century
Description

An Important Large 'Phoenix & Peony' Blue and White Brush Washer (Bi-xi)

Late Qing Dynasty, Guangxu Period (c. 1875–1908)

Provenance: The G.S. May Private Collection, London

This exceptionally large and robustly potted brush washer represents the pinnacle of the Late Qing "Scholar’s Taste." Measuring 22.5 cm at its widest diameter and weighing a substantial 1.1 kilograms, the piece possesses a gravity and presence intended for the refined studio of a literati official. The compressed globular form features an elegantly inverted rim, designed to prevent water from splashing during the rinsing of calligraphy brushes.

The exterior is masterfully painted in vibrant tones of cobalt blue with a continuous frieze of two Imperial Phoenixes (Fenghuang) soaring amidst a dense ground of flowering peonies and scrolling foliage. The painting quality is superb, exhibiting the "watercolour" wash technique where the cobalt varies in tone to create depth and movement in the plumage.

Unusually, the interior is also richly decorated, featuring a central medallion of a stylized floral star surrounded by scrolling vines, allowing the owner to admire the artwork even while the vessel was in use.

The Mark: The base bears a finely written six-character apocryphal mark of Emperor Chenghua within a double circle.

In the Guangxu period, this mark was used as a deliberate tribute to the Ming Dynasty’s "Golden Age" of porcelain.

The Foot Rim: The unglazed foot rim is "square-cut" and has developed a natural, deep orange iron-red oxidation at the glaze line—a hallmark of genuine 19th-century firing.

The Patina: The base retains an "honest" patina of accumulated carbon and mineral deposits, consistent with over a century of handling and domestic use.

Condition and Provenance

Offered in excellent antique condition.

The base retains the paper collection label: "The G.S. May Esquire Private Collection, London, No. 619," providing a rare and ironclad Victorian-era provenance that is highly coveted by modern international collectors.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A brush washer, known as a bi-xi in Chinese, is a shallow vessel designed for scholar studios to wash ink from calligraphy and painting brushes. Traditionally placed on the scholars desk alongside inkstones and brush rests, these vessels evolved into decorative objects reflecting refined aesthetic tastes.

Blue and white porcelain is constructed from refined kaolin clay, painted with natural cobalt oxide oxide pigments onto the unfired body, and coated in a translucent glaze. The piece is then fired at temperatures exceeding 1,200 degrees Celsius, fusing the cobalt into a vivid underglaze blue motif beneath the vitrified surface.

Authentic historic pieces display signs of age such as gentle wear around the unglazed foot rim, subtle glaze contraction rim lines, and minor iron spot impurities where cobalt concentrated. Hand-painted brushwork exhibits varied tonal depth and natural fluid movement rather than crisp, uniform printed lines.

Position a ceramic brush washer as a central decorative dish on an entry console, library desk, or side table. Pair it with dark wood tones, brass decorative objects, or stacked art books to balance historic craft with modern interior arrangements.

Clean underglaze porcelain using lukewarm water mixed with a gentle, non-abrasive soap, using soft microfibre cloths to remove surface dust. Avoid chemical solvents, harsh scrubbers, or sudden temperature shifts that could stress the glaze or body.
