Victorian Majolica Charger by Gebruder Schutz

Description

A lovely Austrian Majolica Charger by Gebruder Schutz, dating from the late 19th Century. It is decorated in the Art Nouveau style in tones of blue and brown with lovely raised figures of gnomes and classical swags. Impressed maker's marks to the base.

It's a very decorative piece and it's in good condition for its age. There are some minor signs of age and use and some light surface marks and small scuffs but no major damages or anything detrimental.

Diameter : 12” / 30cm

FAQs

Victorian majolica is a style of relief-moulded earthenware ceramics coated with colourful, clear lead glazes. First introduced by Minton at the 1851 Great Exhibition, the technique quickly spread across Britain, Europe, and North America during the nineteenth century.

Majolica pieces were crafted by pressing earthenware clay into plaster moulds to create high-relief raised patterns. Once dried and bisque-fired, oxide-tinted glazes were painted onto specific areas before a final low-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic nineteenth-century majolica usually features impressed manufacturer marks or numerical shape codes on the reverse, a heavy earthenware weight, fine glaze crazing, and vibrant lead-glazed pigments distinct from later twentieth-century reproductions.

These decorative chargers can be mounted using wall-plate hangers as part of a gallery wall or positioned on a plate stand atop a sideboard or mantelpiece to showcase the detailed relief work against neutral backdrops.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or brush. Avoid soaking majolica in water or placing it in dishwashers, as moisture can penetrate fine crazing cracks in the glaze and weaken the underlying porous earthenware clay.
