Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century Dutch genre portraiture typically focuses on everyday regional life, portraying working-class individuals such as fishermen and craftspeople in authentic traditional attire. Influenced by realism and earlier Dutch Golden Age traditions, these works emphasize atmospheric lighting, realistic textures, and narrative coastal settings.

Artists during this period primarily utilized ground oil pigments applied to stretched linen canvas or wooden panels. The completed paintings were typically housed in hand-carved wooden or moulded gesso frames finished with real gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period oil paintings exhibit natural age patterns such as uniform craquelure across the paint layer, darkening or yellowing of historic varnish, and authentic oxidisation on the reverse of the canvas or wood panel. Framing techniques, including hand-carved joinery or original gesso loss, also provide evidence of age.

Antique portraiture is frequently used as a focal point above sideboards, fireplace mantels, or integrated into an eclectic gallery wall. The warm tones of gilded frames and oil pigments provide visual contrast against minimalist contemporary backdrops or complement classic heritage interiors.

Preservation requires hanging the canvas away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity fluctuations, and direct heat sources. Dust the surface very gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or water, and consult a professional conservator for varnish restoration.
