Antique Milas Rug, Milas, South-west Anatolia.

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Brian MacDonald Antique Rugs & Carpets

Milas lies between Mugla and Kusadasi in the south-western coastal region of the Aegean.

The pre-1900 rugs made in Milas are probably amongst the most sought-after of Anatolian rugs, owing to their high quality, with medium to fine knotting and vegetable colours.

This fabulous Milas rug probably originated in the area of Karaova due to its field of vertical border patterns and dates to the early 19th century.

The outer ivory border and inner pea-green border has a remarkable abstraction of a carnation with the main red border design comprising, what appears to be, a stylised dragon feeding on a continuous vine. This depiction can also be seen in the golden-yellow and red, vertical field borders.

The natural colours are beautiful and the photos just don''t do the rug full justice. This is a rare and very collectible rug.

Size: 1.52m x 1.17m (5'' 0'' x 3'' 10'').

Viewing by appointment only.
