Mezzotint Portrait of Sarah Churchill (Nee Jennings). Duchess of Marlborough by John Smith, After Sir Godfrey Kneller.

18th century
Description

SARAH CHURCHILL (NEE JENNINGS). DUCHESS OF MARLBOROUGH BY JOHN SMITH, AFTER SIR GODFREY KNELLER.

Fine early 18th mezzotint portrait of the illustrious Sarah Churchill (née Jenyns (Jennings)), Duchess of Marlborough by and published by John Smith, after Sir Godfrey Kneller, Bt.

The wife of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, Sarah Jennings was appointed Lady of the Bedchamber in 1683, and became a close friend and adviser to Queen Anne. Vivacious and adept at politicking, she used her position to further the military career of her husband. Eventually in 1711, her self-confident dominance of the Queen provoked a quarrel and estrangement, and both she and the Duke were dismissed from their offices.

This fine mezzotint is a particularly rich impression which is in an excellent state of conservation. It is housed under rippled glass in a very fine quality ebonised frame with sanded gilt slip.
