Attributed To Charles Jagger (1770-1827) - Portrait Miniature Of A Regency Beau
£1,800 $2,423 €2,077
A fine quality and highly detailed early 19th century portrait miniature of a handsome Regency beau attributed to the miniaturist Charles Jagger (1770-1827).
The dashing sitter is depicted half length, with wide eyes and rosebud lip. He gazes intently and directly at us the viewer from under a mop of curly brown hair. He wears the traditional clothing of gentleman of substance, namely a black double breasted coat with velvet collar and a black cravat, he is the epitome of elegance.
Charles Jagger (c. 1770-1827) Jagger worked mainly in Bath. He lived in Bath at Green Street in 1809 and then at Milsom Street (1811-21), both at the heart of Bath’s fashionable shopping area. His miniatures are finely coloured and are the work of an accomplished draughtsman. A portrait he made of the Duke of Clarence later provided a source for an engraving.
His portraits were said to be good likenesses. Hester Lynch Piozzi, the diarist, had her por...trait painted by Jagger in 1819 and noted, ‘Jagger’s Portrait lovely; and though lovely – very like indeed!’
This fine work is in an excellent atet of conservation and ready to enjoy in its original red leather and velvet and silk lined morocco leather box.
