MUSEUM QUALITY JAPANESE DOLL OF A FUJI MUSUME / NOBLE PROVENANCE
 
Fine and highly decorative museum quality early 20th century Japanese antique doll of a Fuji ''Musume'' in its original wood and lacquered windowed carving box.
 
This doll was gifted to the Sir Alvary Gascoigne who was the British ''Political Representative'' in Japan from 1946 through 1951. In 1947 when he was made a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George. He left Tokyo in 1951.
 
FUJI MUSUME

The dance was invented by a famous actor of the Yedo era and it was
 
devised from the picture of Ohtsu-e painted by Yuasa Matabei. The graceful figure of a girl with a branch of wistaria flowers dancing to the music of Kiyomoto or Nagauta indicates the daughter-like character of Yedo girls and this dance is popular among Japanese.
