Fine William IV Figured Rosewood Writing Table / Library Desk C.1835

19th century
Description

A fine William IV writing or centre table in richly figured rosewood, dating to circa 1835, of elegant proportions and excellent quality.

The rectangular top, with gently rounded corners, is beautifully figured, displaying the deep tones and striking grain associated with the finest rosewoods of the period. The frieze is fitted with two working drawers to one side, retaining hand-cut dovetail construction, and false drawers to the reverse, allowing the piece to be used as a freestanding centre table with balanced symmetry.

Raised on distinctive twin pedestal supports with turned columns and shaped bases, the design reflects the bold yet refined character of the William IV period. The clean lines and strong architectural form make it both decorative and highly practical.

Equally suited as a writing table, library table, or centre table, this is a versatile piece that works beautifully in both traditional and more contemporary interiors.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

William IV furniture dates from 1830 to 1837, serving as a transitional style between the refined proportions of the Regency era and the heavier ornamentation of early Victorian design. Characteristics include bold carved architectural details, substantial pedestals, and the extensive use of figured exotic timbers such as rosewood and mahogany.

Tables from this period typically featured solid wood frames faced in highly figured timber veneers, particularly Brazilian rosewood or Cuban mahogany. Secondary woods like pine or oak were used for drawer linings, complemented by concealed brass castors and hand-cut dovetail joints.

Authentic pieces demonstrate early nineteenth-century cabinetmaking techniques, including hand-sawn secondary timbers and original brass hardware. Design markers include robust trestle end-supports, flat rectangular platform bases, scroll feet, and smooth frieze drawers with concealed hand-grips or subtle mouldings.

A dark rosewood desk creates a strong focal point in a modern home office or living area when paired with modern task lighting and clean-lined architectural seating. Placing the desk centrally in a room rather than against a wall highlights the timber figure and structural silhouette from all angles.

Rosewood requires protection from direct sunlight and sudden humidity changes to prevent veneer movement or cracking. Regular dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and occasional application of high-grade beeswax polish preserves the natural sheen and patination.
