Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency card tables, produced roughly between 1811 and 1830, are characterised by classical proportions, elegant pedestal bases, and high-quality dark hardwood veneers such as rosewood or mahogany. They typically feature a swivel fold-over top that rotates ninety degrees to reveal a playing surface or storage well.

During the 1820s, cabinetmakers heavily utilised Brazilian rosewood, mahogany, and brass inlaid details. The internal playing surface was often lined with wool baize, while the structural frame and drawer linings relied on secondary woods like pine or oak.

Authentic Regency card tables display period joinery techniques, such as hand-cut dovetails, original brass castors, and natural timber shrinkage consistent with two centuries of age. The timber pattern should display genuine grain rather than printed faux finishes, and the rotation mechanism should show authentic wear.

When closed, a Regency card table functions as an occasional side table or hall console against a wall. It can be accessorised with contemporary table lamps, ceramics, or framed artwork to balance traditional craftsmanship with modern design elements.

Maintain rosewood furniture by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and heat radiators to prevent wood movement, veneer lifting, or colour fading.
