Unusual Japanese antique (late 19thc) bronze/silver tobacco pouch/purse fitting, depicting two noh dancers. 6.6cm x 2cm.
 
Excellent original condition.
 
Noh dancers (or performers) are specialists in a 14th century Japanese musical drama that combines slow, stylized dance (mai), masked acting, and chanting. Primarily male actors (shite) use highly codified gestures and masks to portray ghosts, deities, or women, with movements focusing on intense emotion through subtle, controlled motions, such as sliding feet without lifting them.
