Derby Porcelain Recumbent Stag with Bocage, Model E100, C.1755-1765

Description

A large Derby soft-paste porcelain figure of a recumbent stag before a flowering tree, produced in Derby in the mid-18th century. The modelling is characteristic of early factory work, with lively posture and finely observed detail, the coat painted with iron-red mottling over a pale ground.

This figure belongs to the Derby “Stag and Doe at Lodge” series and represents the bocage version recorded as model E100, identifiable by its developed tree and applied flowers.

The stag has particular relevance to Derby’s heraldic tradition, which helps explain its prominence in early factory models.

Two old labels remain to the underside: “Definitely early / Derby source by / Bernard Watney / and Henry Sandon” and “identified by Bernard Watney / Early Derby – 1754”, with “1815” crossed out. These references reinforce the early dating and authenticity of the piece.

Such larger bocage models are less frequently encountered than smaller early examples and have strong collector appeal.
