Derby Porcelain Pair of Deer “Stag and Doe at Lodge”, C.1765–1770

Description

A rare pair of Derby porcelain figures representing a recumbent stag and doe, dating to circa 1765-1770. Executed in soft-paste porcelain and decorated in coloured enamels, the bodies are painted with iron-red spotting and rest on naturalistic bases with applied foliage.

The model is recorded by Peter Bradshaw and can be traced from the early Dry-edge version B8 through the Patch Period E99, with a related bocage version E100, and later developments (Bradshaw, pp. 35, 123-125, 432). This pair represents the mid-18th-century form of the model.

The stag held particular significance in Derby as part of the city’s heraldic crest, which explains the prominence of such subjects within the factory’s production. The modelling is refined and balanced, with well-articulated limbs and expressive heads.

A particularly well-preserved example of this classic Derby subject, valued for its scale and the survival of delicate applied elements.

Stag: weight 695 g, height 20.3 cm (8.0?), length 16.5 cm (6.5?), depth 10 cm (3.9?)

Doe: weight 482 g, height 12 cm (4.7?), length 17 cm (6.7?), depth 8.2 cm (3.2?)

Condition

Stag: excellent antique condition; all elements intact; a very small firing crack to the base.

Doe: small chip to one leaf; otherwise excellent antique condition with full preservation of the decoration and modelling.
