Chinese Famille Rose Vase with Magu and Shoulao, Jingdezhen, Late Qing C. 1870

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

An elegant Chinese porcelain vase decorated in famille-rose enamels with scenes celebrating longevity. One side depicts the Daoist immortal Magu accompanied by a deer and a youthful attendant. In Chinese symbolism the deer represents longevity and success in official life.

The composition belongs to the traditional Magu xianshou theme — “Magu Celebrating Longevity”. The reverse presents Shoulao, the god of longevity, shown with his characteristic high forehead, long beard, staff and peach of immortality. Beside him stands a dignified male figure in formal dress holding a ceremonial staff, while behind them a female attendant carries a ceremonial banner pole. Together the scenes express traditional wishes for long life, honour and prosperity.

The decoration follows the refined fencai painting style developed in Jingdezhen, the historic centre of Chinese porcelain production. The figures are painted with soft tonal modelling, creating delicate expressions, while the deer and robes display careful brushwork.

Additional texture is provided by raised enamel decoration applied in relief, particularly visible in the beard of Shoulao and details of the garments. The vase has a baluster form with moulded animal-mask handles supporting loose rings at the shoulders.

The palette, technique and figure style indicate manufacture in Jingdezhen during the Late Qing period, circa 1870.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Famille Rose is a type of Chinese porcelain introduced during the Qing dynasty in the early eighteenth century, characterised by overglaze enamel painting featuring pink and magenta shades derived from colloidal gold.

These pieces were crafted from kaolin clay fired at high temperatures in Jingdezhen, followed by hand-applied overglaze enamels and gilding before a second lower-temperature firing.

Authenticity is indicated by uneven hand-painted enamel textures, natural wear around the unglazed foot rim, subtle firing imperfections, and precise period-appropriate iconographic detail.

Display the vessel as a singular focal statement on a dark wood sideboard, within a minimalist bookshelf, or centrally on a mantelpiece to contrast contemporary decor.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, avoiding immersion in water, abrasive chemicals, or friction over delicate gilt areas.
