Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-20th century British painters frequently travelled to southern Europe, creating vibrant works that captured the intense light, rustic architecture, and coastal towns of the Riviera and Italy. These works are typically distinguished by thick impasto application using palette knives, warm color palettes, and painterly architectural details.

Mid-century artists commonly applied heavy oil paints onto stretched linen canvas or rigid artist board. Technique often involved palette knives or stiff bristle brushes to create raised textures, which were then framed in painted wooden mouldings with cloth slips.

Authentic pieces generally display distinctive artist signatures near the lower corners, consistent craquelure or age marks on the paint surface, and era-appropriate canvas backing, stretchers, or framing hardware.

A mid-century oil painting works effectively as a focal point above a sideboard or console table. Grouping the piece with contemporary ceramic vases or wooden accents balances the rich texture of the artwork while anchoring the colour palette of the room.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, dampness, and high heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Light dust can be removed gently using a dry, soft-bristle brush, while deep cleaning should strictly be conducted by a professional art conservator.
