Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-nineteenth-century watercolour portraits are defined by detailed draughtsmanship, soft colour blending, and formal sitters captured in realistic detail. Created before photography became widespread, these portraits captured individual likenesses and sartorial details of the period.

Artists during this era typically executed portraits using watercolour washes, charcoal, or coloured chalks on paper or card stock. These works were frequently mounted under glass in oval giltwood or moulded frames to prevent environmental degradation.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural aging to the paper medium, such as foxing or subtle toning, along with contemporary framing materials. Look for period signatures, dates, or framer labels on the reverse of the backing board.

Oval framed portraits integrate well into modern gallery walls alongside contemporary graphics or architectural sketches. Placing a single framed portrait in a narrow nook, hallway, or alongside a bookshelf adds historic depth to contemporary spaces.

Paper artworks must be displayed away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and pigment degradation. Maintaining stable humidity levels and utilizing UV-protective glass with acid-free mounting boards prevents paper discoloration over time.
