Small Old Sheffield Plated Meat Dome by Henry Wilkinson C1830

Description

A fine small meat dome made of Old Sheffield Plate. Dating to c1830 with dome and handle marked for the cross keys of Henry Wilkinson. Wonderfully ornate handle and tinned to the interior. With a family crest to the front for the Adam family, with the Latin motto 'Crux mihi grata quies' (The cross gives me welcome rest).

In good condition with only slight surface wear due to age and use.

A meat dome, or dish cover, was designed in the 18th and 19th centuries to retain heat and protect roast meats during formal dining services. Old Sheffield Plate refers to a process invented in 1742 where silver was fused onto a copper ingot before being rolled into sheets.

These covers were crafted by hammer-forming fused silver-on-copper sheets into oval or round domes, featuring cast silver or silver-plated detachable handles. The base material consists of a copper core sandwiched between layers of sterling silver.

Look for exposed copper along the worn edges, known as bleeding, alongside die-struck makers marks or sunburst symbols near the rim or handle. Authentic pieces often feature rubbed-in silver shields designed to receive engraved armorial crests without exposing the underlying copper.
