Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French salon chairs from the nineteenth century were designed for formal reception rooms, frequently drawing inspiration from eighteenth-century Louis XV and Louis XVI designs. They typically feature carved timber frames with leaf or shell motifs, gilded finishes, upholstered arm pads known as manchettes, and cabriole or fluted legs.

The frames were generally carved from beech or walnut before being prepared with layers of gesso. Gold leaf was applied via water gilding or oil gilding over a coloured clay base called bole. Upholstery traditionally incorporated webbed jute foundations, animal hair stuffing, and woven brocade or tapestry fabrics.

Authentic period pieces show hand-carved details with subtle variations between matching pairs rather than identical machine moulding. The gilding often reveals natural wear where the underlying bole or timber shows through at high-touch areas, alongside traditional mortise-and-tenon frame joinery.

Giltwood armchairs can be incorporated into contemporary settings by placing them as accent seating in a master bedroom, flanking a fireplace, or positioning them against a neutral wall to highlight their carved silhouettes and metallic texture.

Dust giltwood surfaces lightly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical sprays that dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Vacuum fabric gently with a mesh-covered nozzle, and keep the chairs away from direct heat sources and humid environments.
