Post Impressionist Cathedral Scene, Morning Bustle, France, Ca 1920 Oil on Board

1900 - 1920
Description

A lovely post impressionist city scene from the early 20th century, depicting a Gothic cathedral overlooking a public square during the morning commute. The composition captures a hazy morning light, with the Gothic facade rendered in broad, textured brushwork. In the foreground, the artist has captured the daily life of the city: working people in hats and heavy coats, figures carrying loads, and passers-by moving through the shadows of the monumental architecture. The oil on board bears an indistinct signature to the lower left which I have not been able to identify and measures 27 x 35 cm. The overall framed size in a good vintage frame with a painted inner slip is 45 x 53 cm

Post-Impressionism developed in France during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as an extension of Impressionism, emphasizing symbolic content, structured compositions, and expressive paint application while moving beyond pure naturalistic representation.

Artists during the 1920s frequently applied oil paints to wooden panels or rigid millboard, utilizing natural pigments mixed with linseed oil, often laid down with textured brushwork or impasto techniques.

Authentic works from this movement typically display period-appropriate support board aging, artist signatures, visible brushwork layer consistency, and age-related paint contraction without modern artificial cracking.

Pair the artwork with understated contemporary furniture and neutral wall shades, allowing the architectural composition and soft palette to serve as a refined focal point.

Display the artwork in a stable environment away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and radiators, cleaning the surface gently with a dry artist brush to clear dust accumulation.
