19th Century Chinese Writing Desk

19th century
Description

A beautifully carved late-Qing Chinese writing desk, crafted in Huan wood and dating to around 145 years old. This elegant five-drawer example originates from Lin Hai City in the south of China and showcases the refined craftsmanship of the period. The drawer fronts are richly carved with nature-inspired scenes, each panel displaying crisp detail and a warm, time-softened patina. The central apron features an intricate openwork geometric design. The wood has developed a deep, mellow tone through age and use. Original metal ring pulls remain in place, each with a pleasingly worn surface that speaks to the desk’s long life. A characterful and authentic piece of Chinese furniture, practical in scale, rich in detail, and full of historic charm.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century Chinese writing desk, often associated with Qing dynasty scholars, features traditional joinery, carved aprons or drawer panels, and a polished or lacquered finish designed for writing, calligraphy, or administration.

These desks were typically constructed using native hardwoods such as elm, pine, or camphor, bound together using mortise-and-tenon joinery without nails, and finished with natural lacquer and cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved decorative motifs, hand-forged or cast brass fittings, integrated surface wear, and traditional frame-and-panel joinery techniques without modern screws or machine nails.

A Chinese writing desk serves as a statement piece in an entryway, a functional home office desk, or an elegant console table behind a sofa in a contemporary living space.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry cloth, avoiding direct sunlight or dramatic humidity changes, and applying a soft beeswax polish sparingly to protect the finish.
