Late 19th Century Mahogany and Brass-mounted Bedframe

19th century
Description

A fine late 19th century mahogany and brass-mounted bedstead, of generous proportions and elegant neoclassical influence, the headboard with a shaped and gently arched cresting rail above a broad, well-figured panel, framed within moulded borders and finely inlaid with brass stringing. The uprights are conceived as fluted, columnar posts with gilt-brass capitals and bases, surmounted by crisply cast acorn finials, lending a sense of architectural solidity and refinement.

The footboard is of corresponding design, slightly lower in height, with a rectangular panel framed by brass line inlay and moulded edges, the corners subtly accented with roundel mounts. It is supported on turned legs terminating in brass-collared feet with castors, allowing for ease of movement. The side rails are plain yet robust, intended for a slatted or boarded base, and retain good structural integrity.

Executed in richly toned mahogany, the bedstead displays particularly attractive figuring across the panels, with a warm, polished surface that complements the restrained use of brass ornament.

Internal dimensions: 54 x 77 inches (standard double size).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late nineteenth-century bedsteads often incorporated Neoclassical and Victorian design elements, combining dark mahogany timber with decorative brass mouldings, fluted columns, and classical finials to structure a bedroom interior.

These beds were constructed using solid mahogany and mahogany veneers over secondary timbers such as pine or oak, decorated with cast or extruded brass trim, corner mounts, and castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished brass detailing, period joinery including iron cast bracket fixings on side rails, and surface patination across metal components.

A late nineteenth-century mahogany bed frame can be styled in a contemporary interior by pairing dark timber panelling with neutral linen bedding to establish visual contrast.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft cloth, apply beeswax polish to timber components periodically, and clean brass mounts with a dry cloth to prevent chemical damage.
