A rare set of William IV Mahogany chairs .
Each chair is constructed from high-quality solid mahogany, possessing a deep, honeyed warmth and retaining its original French polished finish. This finish has developed a magnificent depth of colour r and a soft, authentic patina over nearly two centuries, which we have carefully preserved and enhanced with a fresh hand-waxing in our professional workshop. The broad, curved bar top rails are a particular highlight, showcasing the natural flame and character of the timber.

The silhouette is defined by an elegant sabre profile , with the rear uprights sweeping in a continuous, graceful curve from the top rail down to the floor. In striking contrast, the front legs are expertly turned and tapered , featuring the crisp "tulip" and ring-turned detailing that became the hallmark of the 1830s. This combination of the sleek, curved back and the substantial, decorative front legs gives the set a balanced, sturdy, and masculine presence that was highly prized in the formal dining rooms of the period.

These chairs are notably comfortable , featuring well-proportioned seats and curved back rails that offer excellent support. The drop-in seat pads have been recently re-upholstered in a high-quality, patterned velvet material featuring a vibrant botanical palm leaf motif. Although the upholstery has been previously used, it remains in great condition with no wear or notable marks , offering a striking contemporary contrast to the traditional mahogany.

Structurally, the chairs are in remarkable condition and are entirely free from woodworm. While it is common for this specific bar-back model to show wear, this set has been thoroughly vetted and remains rock-solid. There are a few minor, historic repairs consistent with nearly 200 years of use, including one more substantial repair to a back rail that has been executed to an incredibly high workshop standard - it is visually discreet and structurally sound.

Please note that we currently have a very closely matching pair of William IV dining chairs available for sale as a separate lot at the time of listing. These two lots share an excellent local provenance, having been acquired together from the very same residence where they spent generations being utilised together as a grand set of eight. While this main set of six features plain turned legs, the separate pair boasts elegant carved and reeded front legs, though they share the exact same contemporary botanical velvet upholstery and match beautifully in timber tone, height, and overall scale. We have included a visual comparison in the listing photos, placing one of the chairs from this set alongside the carved pair to clearly show the subtle, hand-crafted variations in the crest rails and leg turnings.

As professional restorers, we understand that fabric is a personal choice; should you wish to change the current look, we are happy to provide a quote to re-upholster this set in a material of your choosing to perfectly suit your interior scheme.
