Early Victorian Mahogany Writing Table with Tooled Leather Top & Reeded Legs, C.1860

19th century
Description

A fine early Victorian mahogany writing table dating to circa 1860, displaying elegant proportions and refined craftsmanship typical of the period. The rectangular top is inset with a richly patinated green leather writing surface, decorated with a gilt and blind-tooled border, adding both practicality and visual appeal.

The table is fitted with two frieze drawers, each retaining their original turned wooden knobs and working locks, accompanied by keys. The drawers are well-made, with quality dovetail construction, providing useful storage while maintaining the table’s balanced and uncluttered design.

Raised on four turned and reeded legs, the table stands on original brass cup castors, allowing for ease of movement and lending a subtle decorative finish. The warm colour and figuring of the mahogany enhance its timeless character.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early Victorian writing tables typically feature clean classical lines, turned or reeded legs, and practical storage options such as twin frieze drawers, reflecting mid-19th-century domestic utility and craftsmanship.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, frequently incorporating hand-tooled leather writing surfaces, brass castors, and dovetail-jointed drawers.

Authentic pieces often showcase hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, original brass castors, hand-turned or reeded timber legs, and light wear consistent with age and historical use.

Position the writing table as a functional home office workspace or an elegant console in an entryway, pairing it with contemporary lighting or modern art to balance traditional joinery with clean aesthetics.

Dust the mahogany framework regularly with a dry cloth and apply high-quality beeswax periodically, while cleaning the leather insert with specialized conditioner to keep the surface supple.
