A fine and elegant Victorian Mahogany Wind-Out dining table Circa 1860 .
. In almost pristine condition, it has been sympathetically restored to preserve every bit of its historical integrity.
The table possesses that idyllic, lightly faded honey mahogany tone throughout, boasting a deep, glazed lustre. The entire piece has been traditionally French polished by a master polisher in the past; since then, the finish has mellowed and very lightly faded, giving it a beautifully authentic look that is nearly impossible to distinguish from a well-cared-for original surface. Its wonderful state is largely thanks to the bespoke, three-piece thick table protector included. This high-quality accessory features a burl wood effect vinyl top for easy cleaning and a soft, felt-like underside to cushion the wood, folding away neatly when you want to show off the grain.
Supporting the top are four substantial legs, expertly turned with an elegant octagonal profile that gives the piece a sophisticated, architectural silhouette. Unlike many wind-out tables that struggle with age, this example is remarkably stable and sits completely flat when fully extended. It runs true and straight, showing no signs of sagging, and there is absolutely no movement or "play" in any of the joints—a real testament to its original construction and the care it has received.
This table can manage to accommodate 4-8 chairs and be used as a formal dining room or even a breakfast table. The winding mechanism has been expertly serviced in our workshop, where it was cleaned and waxed to ensure it operates with exceptional smoothness using its original winding handle.
The legs terminate in solid polished brass castors with their original brown porcelain wheels. Each castor is clearly stamped 'D. M&S' beneath a royal crown, identifying them as the work of Davis, Maw & Sons . This prestigious London-based firm was a top-tier manufacturer of furniture hardware in the 19th century, often supplying the very best cabinetmakers of the day. Having these crown-stamped fittings still intact is a clear hallmark of the table's superior original quality.
Condition and Provenance As antiques, this table shows signs of age and use. While in fantastic condition, expect minor marks consistent with historical pieces. The table has a strong design and is structurally sound, with no major damage that would detract from its beauty or functionality.
