A Superb Webb's Victorian Satin Glass Vase

19th century
Description

A quality, good sized satin glass vase from the end of the Victorian era. The shaped body sits on a raised base with a long slender neck and large, flared and crimped rim. The vase is decorated with a geometric fretwork design in frosted pale blue over white glass and is probably the work of the great Webb's Company. To the base is a broken pontil mark and the glass has a wonderful shimmer in the light. A pleasing and tactile example with a practical use, alongside being decorative in its own right. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in the late nineteenth century, Victorian satin glass is a type of decorative art glass known for its smooth, matte surface achieved by treating glass with acid vapour.

The mother-of-pearl or air-trap effect was created by blowing a patterned inner layer of glass into a textured mould to trap pockets of air before encasing it in clear glass and applying an acid finish.

Genuine pieces typically exhibit a uniform matte sheen without greasy residues, possess multi-layered cased glass construction, and feature hand-finished details such as folded or crimped rims.

Place the vase on a mantelpiece, open shelving, or a sideboard where indirect light highlights its texture alongside neutral ceramics or timber accents.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild washing-up liquid with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding full submersion or harsh chemical cleaners that could affect the surface treatment.
