This is a good oil painting on board of a lady wearing a lace cap and red gown painted in or around 1880.The artist, circle of Erskine Nicol (1825-1904) has skilfully captured the character and essence of the sitter, her eyes in particular transfix the viewer. The painting is in excellent condition with beautiful vibrant, rich colours. This is attractively framed in a later Monteparnasse style frame that really suit the work.Erskine Nicol was a Scottish figure and genre painter born in Leith in 1825. He taught in Dublin Ireland from 1845-1850 at the height of the Irish famine and identified with the oppression of the Irish people.
