Description

A lovely pair of Scottish antique George III sterling silver "Port" and "Madeira" wine labels. Each has been elaborately designed with two naked figures, one holding a jug and bottle and the other a basket of flowers. There is a plain section in the front of the label engraved with "Port" and "Madeira" and there is a Bacchus head motif at the base profusely decorated with grapes. These Scottish wine labels would make interesting additions to a collection and remain in excellent condition. When taking photographs, it is difficult to eliminate the reflection on silver.

Height: 3.6 cms (1.4")

Length: 6.1 cms (2.4")

Weight: 38 grams

They were hallmarked in Edinburgh for 1818 by James McKay.

Silver wine labels, also referred to as decanter tickets, emerged in Great Britain during the eighteenth century following the widespread adoption of clear glass decanters. They were designed to identify dark-coloured fortified wines and spirits that could not be distinguished visually.

Georgian decanter tickets were typically crafted from solid sterling silver or silver plate using hand-stamping, die-casting, and hand-chasing techniques. They feature small silver suspension chains attached via soldered rings on either side of the plaque.

Authenticity is verified through hallmark inspection, which typically includes the lion passant stamp for sterling silver, a makers mark, a date letter, and a monarchs head duty mark. Weight, hand-chased relief details, and natural oxidisation around link holes also assist identification.
