Pair of Victorian Crewelwork Armchairs

19th century
For Sale by Earl and Rymer (Reserved for a buyer)
Description

An exceptional pair of Victorian armchairs with a classic "English Country House" aesthetic.

The chairs are upholstered in a vintage crewelwork featuring a hand-stitched trailing vine and floral pattern. While not new, the fabric is remarkably well-preserved. There is some light fading in areas, this appears as subtle stripes, it is worth noting that it is far less prominent in person than it is in the photographs.

Both chairs have been fitted with replacement castors at some point—one chair with a modern set and the other with period-appropriate antique castors.

Seat Height 38cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian crewelwork armchairs feature upholstered frames adorned with hand-embroidered wool thread designs on linen or cotton backings. Popularised in the nineteenth century, these pieces drew design inspiration from seventeenth-century Jacobean embroidery patterns, featuring botanical motifs and curving vine work.

Victorian armchairs typically utilise solid hardwood internal framing, such as beech or oak, with exposed legs crafted from walnut or mahogany. Upholstery traditionally incorporated horsehair padding, steel coil springs, and hand-stitched decorative textiles including wool crewelwork.

Authentic Victorian seating often features hand-turned wooden legs fitted with brass castors, traditional coil spring construction tied with jute twine, and hand-tacked upholstery framing. Frame joinery typically exhibits mortise and tenon construction with hand-finished timber details.

A pair of crewelwork armchairs can be positioned flanking a fireplace or alongside a contemporary plain sofa to introduce texture and historical pattern. Pairing them with neutral walls and minimal architectural detailing allows the embroidered textiles to serve as a focal point.

Antique crewelwork upholstery requires regular, gentle vacuuming using a soft brush attachment and low suction to prevent fibre damage. Direct sunlight exposure should be minimised to prevent thread fading, and professional textile conservators should handle stain removal or thread repairs.
