Small Welsh Box Settle C.1800

19th century
Description

Small early 19th.c. Welsh box settle or hall bench c.1800. Purchased locally, it is an unusual example being in teak or similar rather than native timber - suggesting a link to maritime trade perhaps? Low and slightly sloping backrest with original moulding to the top and unusual reeded detail to the upper panels and the lower mullions. Shaped arms with rounded ends on tapering and chamfered supports. Board seat, the centre panel hinged to reveal useful storage below for boots and shoes etc. Flat panels to the front and sides and a moulded plinth or kickboard around the base. Note the original backboards and how the rear flares outwards for stability. Great rustic character with some old wear and repairs but otherwise excellent colour and condition, restored cleaned and waxed in our workshops.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Welsh box settle is a form of traditional wooden seating developed in Wales during the 17th and 18th centuries. It combines a high-backed bench with a box-like base under the seat to offer protected seating alongside enclosed storage for textiles and household goods.

These settles were predominantly constructed from locally sourced timbers, most commonly oak, pine, or elm. Construction featured mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, hand-planed raised panels, and iron strap or butt hinges for the seat lid.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-saw marks on secondary woods, hand-forged iron hardware, wooden peg joinery, and natural wear patterns along the footrest and armrests. The interior timber often retains an unvarnished state with characteristic age-related oxidisation.

A box settle works well in an entryway, hallway, or boot room, providing practical seating and hidden storage. Modern interiors often pair these rustic wooden forms with neutral linen seat cushions or place them against painted walls to highlight the deep timber tone.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent the wood from shrinking or splitting.
