Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian furniture from the early twentieth century often draws inspiration from eighteenth-century Neoclassical and Sheraton designs. Key features include lighter proportions, dark polished woods such as mahogany, geometric glazed doors, and delicate marquetry or stringing inlays.

Primary construction typically utilised mahogany, rosewood, or satinwood. Accent decorations featured marquetry inlays using boxwood and fruitwoods, complemented by blown glass panes and brass hardware fittings.

Authentic pieces generally show hand-cut dovetail joints, original glass with minor imperfections, and natural wear around handles or hinges. The underside and unexposed back panels usually feature rougher-sawn secondary woods like pine or oak.

Corner cabinets effectively utilise unused architectural space in dining rooms, living spaces, or hallway alcoves. Modern styling involves displaying curated ceramics, books, or glassware to contrast the dark timber against neutral wall shades.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, and apply a beeswax polish annually in the direction of the wood grain. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and damp environments to prevent the wood or veneer from warping and lifting.
